About Angelo Gaja

Angelo Gaja – a Piedmont wine estate

Angelo Gaja is a Piedmont estate with an international reputation. Based in Cuneo, near Barbaresco, the winery is now led by Angelo Gaja in its fourth generation. Founded in 1859, Gaja contributed to wider recognition of Piedmont, and especially the Langhe, as a wine region. The estate was also among the early local producers to bottle wine rather than sell it in the trading casks customary at the time. Today, around 300,000 bottles are produced each year from roughly 92 hectares.

Gaja – consistency and cellar style

Gaja wines are positioned at the premium end of the market and are often cellared for extended periods. The estate has received numerous distinctions, including repeated "Tre Bicchieri" awards from Gambero Rosso, as well as high scores from Wine Spectator, Decanter and Robert Parker. Critical coverage frequently notes the consistency of the wines. Cellar master Guido Rivella has contributed to that approach, developing a modern Langhe style with more controlled tannins. Bordeaux provided one reference point, while Piedmont's growing conditions and varieties remained central to the wines' identity. The collaboration between Gaja and Rivella sought a recognisable estate style rather than a direct copy of French wines.
