About Rocca di Castagnoli

Rocca di Castagnoli: Chianti Classico between history and modern practice

Rocca di Castagnoli is a medieval estate near Gaiole in Chianti. Its 850 hectares include around 100 hectares of vineyards, planted principally with Sangiovese between approximately 380 and 860 metres above sea level around Monte Luco. The property was first mentioned in a document from AD 940. In 1924, Rocca di Castagnoli joined other Chianti Classico estates in founding the Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico. Today the team uses modern winemaking equipment to produce Chianti Classico from its own Sangiovese clones. Calogero Cali acquired the estate in 1981, renewed the vineyards and restored the villa. The medieval fortress cellar was adapted for maturation in casks, while vinification takes place in a newer cellar.
